‘Save Our Post Office Campaign’ - November 7, 2007

Yesterday delighted residents celebrate NO CLOSURES in Wirral West along with Charles Hendry MP – Shadow Minster for Post Offices.
Thank you to everyone who took part in our 7 month ‘Save Our Post Office Campaign’ and to those who signed our petition, over 5,000 in total.
It was a long and well fought campaign and achieved the result we wanted : NO CLOSURES
Yesterday closures were announced across Wirral and Merseyside, only Wirral West escaped closures – and that has to be attributed to the hard work of all those who took part in the ‘Save Our Post Office Campaign’
I’m absolutely delighted our community was listened to. Post Offices are vital to the community. Time after time we heard people tell us we want our Post Offices saved and I’m delighted to tell you we have managed to do just that.
Charles Hendry MP and Shadow Minister said “Esther has done a fantastic job in raising concerns about the threats to our local post offices. Under Labour, we are losing one third of all our post offices and Esther has given local people the chance to show how important their local post office is to them and to have their voice heard at a national level. It is a great success of her campaign that none of the post offices in Wirral West are to be forced to close.”
However those who weren’t as fortunate are now facing hefty closures – I was in Chester yesterday where there will be 6 post office closures. Already the community is coming together to fight these closures, leading the way in Chester is Stephen Mosley and in Wirral South Jeff Clarke. Closures Announced yesterday
City of Chester 6 post offices to close
Crewe & Nantwich 4 post offices to close
Crosby 2 post offices to close
Warrington South 3 post offices to close
Weaver Vale 1 post office to close
Wirral 4 post offices to close (Wirral South 2, Birkenhead 1 and Wallasey 1)

Congratulations !
This just shows what local pressure can do on a national issue.
Well worth all the Saturday early starts gathering signatures.
